Media Star Power
Emotion
Emotion touches an audience and brings a deeper dimension to
words. On TV we see it. We feel it. On radio or on telephone
interviews, we hear it and we feel it. A print reporter will often
write about the state of your emotion: "With a twinkle in his eye..."
"Choking back tears..." "A distraught...."
Tip 1: To be believable we must feel your joy, excitement,
remorse, or concern. You can say the words, but without some emotion
they won't touch your audience.
Tip 2: Do your best to stay emotionally connected to your
message, especially when the subject is emotional. People often get
into "just the facts" mode and leave out how they are feeling about
the subject.
Tip 3: During a crisis the blend of compassion and strength
will help people become emotionally connected to your message.
Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani expressed his emotions after the
9/11/01 tragedies with compassionate leadership, strength and calm
that helped the world to have hope that we would survive those
devastating events.
